Helpful Chrome Extensions for Teachers and Students

Using the Chrome browser is the best way to experience all that Google has to offer, and adding extensions only makes using the online tools even better.   There are some very helpful and useful extensions that can make life as a busy teacher just a little bit easier.

Google Black Menu

Google Black Menu is a great extension for those who wish to see ALL of the applications for Chrome in an easy to read and organized way.  Yes, most of us have become accustomed to using the Apps Launcher, only to find that we still need to hunt down certain applications and extensions in order to use them.  With the Black Menu, all of your applications and extensions are in one place, and they are easy to access.

Google URL Shortener

How many times have you wanted to share a document or some other file in your Google drive with others through an email?  When you go to get the link, it usually it like a mile long, and it barely fits on two lines in the email!  Using the Google URL Shortener you will find how quick and easy it is to share out documents and files with others without a SUPER LONG link address!

Click the application icon in the browsers to get started.  Simply go to the document or file that you want to get the link from, click COPY, and the new URL will appear at the top of the application.

When you click on details, the application will take you to Google Analytics, and give you  information like what browsers were used to access that file or document, as well as how many views your document or file has received over a period of time.

This nice application can even create a QR code to take those individuals with a QR scanner to that document or file with ease.  This is a great tool for both teachers and students!

Google Calendar Extension

Ok, right about now I know you are saying, “Hey wait!  Why would I need an extension when I already have the Google Calendar Application?”  This extension gives you a quick glance of your day, just to help you keep track of upcoming events.

With a click of the icon, I get a quick view of my events today.  Notice the plus sign.  I can add events very quickly and easily though the extension, helping me to saving time.

Google Tab Scissors

Sometimes, switching back and forth from tab to tab can get annoying, especially when you accidentally close one of the tabs.  What is a teacher to do?  Use the Google Tab Scissors to literally cut your Google Chrome tabs to create two or more individual windows.  You can even create a split screen, to show students two entirely different views, helping you demonstrate using digital tools more effectively.

The tabs are in the same window.  Click the Tab Scissors icon, and…

You have two windows open, and a split screen for easy viewing.

Google Tab Glue

There may be other instances where having two windows open is not effective for your class, and Google Tab Glue will bring together two or more windows to form just one Google Chrome browser window for you.  This application works in reverse of Google Tab Scissors.

Where To Get The Extensions
Ok, so I have shared so great tools for you to use, but where in world can you find them?  In the Chrome Web Store.  You will find hundreds of other great add-ons and extensions that are FREE for you to install and use within your Chrome browser!

Look for the apps launcher on the LEFT-HAND side of your browser, right next to the address bar.  Click on the web store app, and let the "shopping" begin!

Here, you can search for Apps, Extensions, and even games.  When you find one that you really want to install, click the Add to Chrome button at the top of the description.  Now you are ready to enjoy the many benefits of using the Chrome browser!
